Direct lithium extraction (DLE) is the future of global brine production because of its lower costs and environmental impact, according to Australian startup ElectraLith.

CEO Charlie McGill sees the company's "direct lithium extraction and refining" surpassing other DLE methods because it does not need water or chemicals.

“We believe ours is the smartest,” says McGill, of the many DLE methods. “It requires no water, no chemicals, it can run on solar and wind, whereas these other processes continue to require water and chemicals and power from the grid.”

McGill is no newcomer to lithium; he served as chief financial officer of Western Australian spodumene aspirant Kidman Resources, shortly before it was acquired by Wesfarmers in 2019. Wesfarmers will start mining and refining the rocks from Kidman’s former Mt Holland mine into lithium hydroxide south of Perth within the next year.
